I love a great hot chocolate recipe, but had to put my own hormone healthy spin on things, so came up with one that serves double duty: tastes fantastic and nourishes the soul as much as it does the body!

What makes this hot chocolate hormone healthy are the adaptogens, which are optional, but I highly recommend them since they help with hormone balance and stress relief! When you’re trying to do all-the-things in this season, but still want something indulgent and satisfying, this is it!

Here’s the low-down on the adaptogens I use:

Maca – This Peruvian root plant gives you an energy and mood boost (and who doesn’t want that!) and may also help with fertility, as well as reducing perimenopause and menopause symptoms by balancing estrogen symptoms in the body. During perimenopause, your estrogen levels start to fluctuate, so incorporating maca is great way to help with hormone balance during this time.

Reishi – This medicinal mushroom helps promote relaxation, gives your immune system a boost, and could help with fatigue as well. Yes, please!

Ashwagandha: Helps the body adapt to stress and may help with insomnia and anxiety as well.

As always, you’ll need to check with a medical professional before you take any supplements. In my hot chocolate recipe, you’ll also notice that you have the option of using whole dates or date syrup. I’ve tried the recipe both ways and it’s great either way, but if you have date syrup on hand, you can skip straight to the frothing and don’t need to blend the entire hot chocolate mixture. I would recommend adding collagen powder to this if you’re looking for an extra protein boost. Hormone Healthy Hot Chocolate


This recipe makes one cup of hot chocolate.

For the hot chocolate:
1 cups of unsweetened almond milk, I love the Malk brand (it contains no oils, gums, fillers, other gut disruptors)
2 tsp raw cacao powder
2 dates, pitted and chopped OR 1-2 tsp of date syrup
2 squares of dark chocolate – I love Hu chocolate for this!
Optional: 1 tsp of reishi, maca, and ashwagandha blend. You could buy these separately, but I love this Superfood+ Adaptogen blend from Navitas
a pinch of sea salt
a sprinkle of cinnamon

Extra toppings:
More cinnamon
Another drizzle of date syrup
Whipped coconut cream or Nutpods
A sprinkle of raw cacao powder
A sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg for warmth


  1. Add all ingredients to a small pot and bring to a simmer. Make sure the chocolate is completely melted and slowly stir it so it dissolves.
  2. Remove from heat and blend if using the chopped dates, otherwise, skip this step and add to a large mug. Froth things up with a frother and add your toppings of choice! Be sure to make twice the recipe if sharing with a friend. Warmth for the body and soul!
